🛁 The Complete Grooming Guide for Dogs Who Hate Bath Time

There are two types of dogs in this world: those who leap joyfully into the tub, and those who can somehow make themselves entirely boneless the moment they hear the word "bath." If yours falls into the second category — you are not alone, and there is hope.

Start before the bath even begins

The biggest grooming mistake pet parents make is skipping the pre-bath preparation. Before the water ever runs, give your dog a thorough brush-out to remove loose fur, tangles, and mats. Wet fur tightens knots and makes them much harder to remove, which means more time in the tub — which no one wants.

Desensitisation is also key for bath-averse dogs. Spend a few days simply letting your dog sniff and explore the bathroom, the tub, and the grooming products without any water involved. Pair each visit with high-value treats to build a positive association.

During the bath

Use lukewarm water — never hot — and a detachable shower head or gentle cup to wet the coat from back to front, avoiding the face initially. A non-slip mat in the tub reduces anxiety significantly for dogs who feel unsteady on slippery surfaces.

Choose a shampoo formulated specifically for dogs — human products can strip their natural coat oils and irritate skin. Work the lather in from neck to tail, and finish with the face using a damp cloth rather than direct water spray.

Coat types and what they need

  • Short, smooth coats (Beagles, Dalmatians): Easy to wash, dry quickly. Monthly baths plus a grooming mitt do the trick.
  • Double coats (Golden Retrievers, Huskies): Need thorough drying to prevent skin irritation. Use a high-velocity dryer or a blow-dry on low heat.
  • Curly or wavy coats (Poodles, Doodles): Prone to matting. Regular conditioning treatment is a must, and professional grooming every 6–8 weeks is ideal.
  • Wire coats (Terriers): Hand-stripping or regular brushing prevents the coat from going soft and flat.
